Speaking From the Heart
About the video of Craig Ferguson we watched in class.. First off.. Good for you! congrats on being so long sober.. keep it up. Second.. yes, its good to hear this coming from people on how we shouldn't make fun of celebrities (or anybody) when they are having a hard time, but the truth is we will make fun of them. We will use their pain and embarassment to cheer us up a little. It makes us feel good to think 'hey, maybe she has it all but at least I've never shaved my head'. We all know deep down that it's wrong to laugh at these people but we all do it anyways.. Its a defence mechanism to ridicule the people we view as being 'above us'. It makes us feel better about ourselves. When is it taking it too far to laugh at someone else? When Brit shaves her head? When the front page of Star magazine reads "Did Heath have a secret love child? A look at the stars life behind closed doors"? He's dead! Leave him and his wife and family alone! (sorry.. that makes me mad).. But if we can't laugh at that what will we laugh at? Tom jumping on Oprahs couch? Angie and Brads 5th child? our world is so wrapped around celebrities lives that theres almost nothing left to laugh at. I dunno.. I agree that its wrong to laugh at people but at the same time I find it funny.. I can't not laugh at them even though I know its wrong..

...I recently saw a "celebrity" live. A woman in the audience was a huge fan and commented on the fact she had fought with her husband for months because the t.v. show South Park had satired him on it. First of all this man told her not to fight with her husband over him, basically because life was to short to battle over things that don't involve you and secondly, he made the point...and this is was moreover relates to your post, is that when a celebrity chooses to become a celebrity..."they virtually paint a bullseye on their back", for that sort of thing.
I found that to be pretty cool and although I never watch South Park, so didn't see that specfic slamming, I have seen him made fun of on SNL, Mad TV and Family Guy...and as great as I think he is, I laugh! Now I just can feel ok about it!
